Teeth are very important in American culture. We spend tons of money on braces, retainers, dental procedures, routine whitening, etc. So if you’re a little skeptical of bamboo toothbrushes (see my gift guide for link - they’re awesome!), well frankly, I get it. Many of us are more comfortable buying from a big dental brand name (all thanks to marketing) when it comes to toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste. So if the biodegrade-able toothbrush thing is a little too granola for you right now, allow me to introduce you to TerraCycle.

Colgate has partnered with TerraCycle to turn your old oral care products, like toothbrushes and empty toothpaste tubes, into school supplies for the Kids in Need Foundation. It’s a win for the environment, students in need, and your teeth (changing your toothbrush every few months is recommended for best brushing practice).

I highly encourage you to store your old brushes and empties (any brand is accepted) in a small container in your bathroom cabinet or under your sink, and once your waste has accumulated enough you can mail it in for FREE. All you have to do is register on and print a complimentary UPS label. Smack it on an old empty box (I know you have an Amazon one somewhere) and send it off. Click here for FAQs.

If we all started recycling our toothbrushes instead of tossing them in the trash, the impact would be profound. Additionally, please check out to learn about more easy, free recycling opportunities for other household items like shampoo bottles. Now you know about it so it’s up to you to be part of the movement - one tube at a time!
